George Bernard Shaws MISALLIANCE July 5 - September 9
The central mismatch of this delicious 1909 comedy is a decidedly odd couple: Hypatia, the lusty, free-spirited daughter of a free-thinking, philandering father who made a bundle in the underwear business, and her fianc Bentley, a.k.a. Bunny, who is all brains and no body and the wealthy son of a powerful Lord. Hypatia longs for something unusual to drop out of the sky. It does. An airplane crashes into the greenhouse, bringing to her an intelligent Adonis and to all the men a fascinating female acrobat. Those ingredients might satisfy a lesser writer but G.B. Shaw is just getting started. Before very long there have been eight marriage proposed and a dash of attempted murder. Widely considered to be one of the great classic plays of the English language, Shaws Misalliance continues to be as fresh and modern as when it was written, nearly a hundred years ago.
William Shakespeares ROMEO AND JULIET July 26 September 16
Famous as a tale about two "star-crossed" lovers, Romeo and Juliet is equally a tale about weaknesses in human nature, family structure and social order. Ever the humanist, William Shakespeare poses troublesome questions about why these brilliant children miscarried on the way to adulthood. While the fate of these young lovers may have hung in the stars, the real tragedy lies the number of ways in which things might have turned out better, and didn't. One after the other, the social institutions that should have rescued them (family, church and ultimately the state) fail them because of a preoccupation with war elsewhere. The inevitable chain of events that lead Romeo and Juliet to their shared grave is as much the failure of friends, family and a warring society to nurture what is best in within us.
